About the Trashy Divas
The Trashy Divas (and dude) are a group of like minded, action oriented people who care about their surroundings and show respect and care by picking up and collecting garbage and trash in Tucson’s neighborhoods and barrios.
The Trashy Diva effort began during the Covid-19 shutdown when Connie Brannock and Amy Weintraub often took early morning bicycle rides up Sentinel Peak, aka “A” Mountain in Tucson. Our intrepid cyclists found all types of litter along the road and throughout the park, detracting from the beauty of the iconic area.
Connie contacted Tucson Clean and Beautiful, the non-profit environmental advocacy and action organization founded in 1985 to preserve and improve the environment, conserve natural resources, and enhance quality of life in the City of Tucson and eastern Pima County for advice and direction, recruited friends and formed Trashy Divas. The Divas adopted “A” mountain for monthly clean ups.
Tucson Clean & Beautiful gave the Trashy Divas the litter-grabbers (the short poles with a claw-like apparatus at the end of the shaft) that enables picking up trash without too much bending and plucking trash from precarious places like prickly cactus.
Tucson Clean and Beautiful also provided heavy-duty trash bags, gloves and reflective safety vests. In addition, the TucsonClean and Beautiful also reviewed safety protocols and the required releases and safety forms to be signed and it coordinates the collection of the bags of trash the group gathers.
Divas usually wear official t-shirts and hats, proudly displaying the Trashy Diva logo. The Divas’ T-shirts were designed by Brannock’s bandmate Mike Polletta. Cristy Pulliam, one of the original Divas, recruited her son, Adam Lundquist, co-founder of Southwest Urban Realty & Development, to pay for the shirts.
Members of the group were recruited by word of mouth and many live in the immediate “A” Mountain area, in nearby neighborhoods like Menlo Park, and downtown spots like Redondo Tower and Mercado San Agustin and other barrios like Dunbar Springs. There are Diva groups springing up in other regions and the Tucson crew is happy to advise and help establish new teams.
